Tube Pump Vs. Rod Pump, Which one Should you Choose?

2025-05-03

In the world of oilfield exploitation, the oil well pump is like the "heart" of the oil well. Its performance determines the output and exploitation efficiency of crude oil. Among the many oil well pumps, the competition between API tubing rod pumps and API sucker rod pumpshas never stopped. One has a simple structure and large displacement, while the other is convenient for pump inspection and adaptable to deep wells. But what are their advantages and disadvantages? Which pump is more suitable for your oil well? Today, we will analyze these two oil well pumps in depth!

1. API tubing rod pumps

API tubing rod pumps are a common type of oil well pump, also known as tubing pumps. Its feature is that the outer cylinder, bushing and suction valve are assembled on the ground and connected to the lower part of the oil pipe and first lowered into the well. Then, the piston equipped with the discharge valve is sent into the pump through the sucker rod. In order to empty the crude oil in the oil pipe, API tubing rod pumps usually use a salvageable suction valve (fixed valve). By lowering the rod column, the buckle at the lower end of the piston bites the salvage head of the suction valve, thereby lifting the suction valve. At present, most wells that run API tubing rod pumps will choose to install an oil drainer at the bottom of the tubing, and unload the oil in the tubing by opening the oil drainer. For wells that run large pumps, the piston cannot be run through the tubing because the piston diameter exceeds the inner diameter of the tubing. At this time, the piston is usually run into the well with the tubing first, and then the sucker rod is run, and the piston in the pump is docked using a disconnector device. API tubing rod pumpshave a large displacement due to their simple structure, low cost, and larger pump diameter allowed for the same tubing diameter. However, API tubing rod pumps should be noted that the tubing needs to be lifted and lowered when the pump is inspected, and the workload of well repair is relatively large, so it is more suitable for wells with shallow pumping depth and high production.

2. API sucker rod pump

API sucker rod pump is also called an insertion pump. The API sucker rod pump is characterized by having two inner and outer working cylinders. The upper end of the outer working cylinder of the API sucker rod pump is equipped with a cone seat and a retaining ring, and the position of the retaining ring determines the depth of the pump. During installation, the outer working cylinder will be lowered into the well with the tubing first, and then the inner working cylinder equipped with the bushing and piston will be connected to the lower end of the sucker rod, lowered into the outer working cylinder together, and fixed in position by the retaining ring. In addition, there is a fixed-barrel bottom-fixed API sucker rod pump, which is characterized by the piston being fixed at the bottom, and the sucker rod driving the pump barrel to reciprocate up and down. During the pump inspection process, there is no need to pull out the tubing, just pull out the inner working cylinder through the sucker rod. The pump inspection operation of the API sucker rod pump is relatively simple, the structure is more complicated than that of the tubular pump, and the manufacturing cost is also higher. Under the same tubing diameter conditions, the pump diameter allowed to be lowered by the API sucker rod pump is smaller than that of the tubular pump. Therefore, it is more suitable for oil wells with a larger pumping depth and a smaller output.
