Let's first take a brief look at the structure and grade classification of the API sucker rod pump:

The API sucker rod pump is connected by a coupling to form a complete API standard sucker rod pum column. The top is connected to the pumping unit through a bare rod, and the bottom is connected to the plunger of the pumping pump, which accurately transmits the reciprocating motion of the ground pumping unit to the downhole pump body.

The common API sucker rod pump is a solid round steel rod with upset rod heads at both ends. According to the use environment and load, the API standard sucker rod pump can be divided into three categories: C, D and K:

C: suitable for light and medium load oil wells;

D: used for medium and heavy load oil wells;

K: specially designed for light and medium load oil wells containing corrosive media.

What are the various coupling forms?

The coupling is a key component of the API sucker rod pump connection. It is divided into the following categories according to its structure:

Ordinary coupling: used for equal diameter connection, divided into type I (with wrench flat) and type II (without wrench flat, suitable for small wells);

Different diameter coupling: used to connect API sucker rod pump of different diameters;

Special coupling: such as roller type and ball type straighteners, widely used in inclined wells and wells prone to eccentric wear, significantly reducing the friction between API sucker rod pump and tubing, and extending the service life of the tubing.

All couplings are usually made of medium carbon structural steel (such as 45 steel), which not only meets the strength and connection performance requirements, but also has good wear resistance and straightening and wear reduction capabilities.

 

Process flow:

The main contents of each process in the typical process flow of API sucker rod pump are as follows!

(1) Material inspection: Check the chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy of the raw materials.

(2) Cold straightening: Straighten the rod materials that have passed the acceptance but do not meet the standard requirements for straightness and are within the allowable cold straightening range.

(3) Fixed length: Determine the blank length of the straightened rod material according to the forging ratio.

(4) Forging the rod head:

① Place one end of the rod material in a heating furnace and heat it to the starting forging temperature.

② Upset and forge the heated rod head, and monitor the final forging temperature.

③ Heat the other end of the rod material to the starting forging temperature.

④ Upset and forge the other heated end of the rod head, and monitor the final forging temperature.

(5) Heat treatment: Heat the entire API sucker rod pump in a heating furnace, and perform overall normalizing, normalizing + tempering, or quenching and tempering treatment to achieve the expected mechanical properties.

(6) Hot straightening: After heat treatment, the API sucker rod pump is stretched and straightened in a hot state, or placed on a cooling table and air-cooled to about 120°C for rolling straightening.

(7) Assembly: The external thread at one end of the API sucker rod pump is coupled according to the preload requirements.

(8) Install the protective cap:

① Put the protective cap on the external threaded joint of the API sucker rod pump without the coupling to prevent the thread from being damaged.

② Put the protective cap on the coupling end.
